Crushed concrete, graded for new concrete.

Three grades of recycled concrete aggregate — ¾ in, ⅜ in and manufactured sand — crushed from clean demolition concrete at our yard in Aubrey, with the steel pulled out and every stockpile sampled and lab‑tested every 500 tons. Sold by the ton across Denton and Collin counties.

Stockpiles

Three grades of crushed concrete.

One source — the last building — screened three ways. These are the piles our own ready-mix draws from, and every one of them is also sold on its own by the ton.

Pile of ¾ inch crushed concrete aggregate
¾in
Structural coarse aggregate

The workhorse. Up to 100% replacement of quarried coarse aggregate in ready-mix, matched to the project’s specification.

Pile of ⅜ inch crushed concrete pea gravel
⅜in
Pea gravel

For pumped mixes, thin sections and congested reinforcement. Same testing, finer cut.

Pile of manufactured sand made from crushed concrete fines
#4minus
Manufactured sand

The fines from the same rock. Used in the mix, and in base courses where the specification allows.

Crushing line

How demolition concrete becomes aggregate.

One continuous line and six moves, all of them dry until the last one. Concrete goes in broken; it comes out as graded rock and clean steel.

  2. 02CrushA jaw crusher breaks slabs, footings and structural concrete down to rock.

Recycled vs. quarried

Is crushed concrete as good as gravel?

For the jobs it’s graded for, it’s tested against the same ASTM C33 envelope as quarried stone. Two things are honestly different, and we design around both.

  • It drinks more water. Recycled rock carries some of its old cement paste, so it absorbs more than quarried stone. The mix design allows for it, and moisture probes in our bins read the free water in the rock as it’s drawn, so the batch water is corrected load by load.
  • Strength sets the share. The higher a mix’s design strength, the less recycled rock goes in: up to 100% at 3,000 to 4,000 psi, 75% at 4,500, 50% at 5,000 and 30% at 6,000.

And one thing it isn’t: road base. A lot of crushed concrete is sold as road base or fill. Ours is screened to the gradations new concrete uses, so it can go back into structural service.

Questions

Crushed concrete questions, answered.

Is crushed concrete the same as recycled concrete aggregate?

Yes. Recycled concrete aggregate, or RCA, is crushed concrete that has had the steel pulled out and been screened to size. Ours comes in ¾ in, ⅜ in and #4 minus.

What sizes of crushed concrete do you sell?

Three: ¾ in structural coarse aggregate, ⅜ in pea gravel, and #4 minus manufactured sand.

Is there rebar in it?

An overband magnet lifts the rebar and wire off the belt before the rock is screened, and the steel goes to a mill to become new steel.

Is it tested?

Each stockpile is sampled and lab-tested every 500 tons against the same ASTM C33 gradation envelope as quarried stone.

Can crushed concrete go back into new concrete?

That’s what ours is graded for. Our standard ready-mix designs carry up to 100% recycled coarse aggregate, and the percentage is written on the mix design sheet for your engineer.

How is it sold?

By the ton, weighed on our truck scale. Email the grade, the tonnage and the job address to sales@hillmix.com for a price.

Where does the concrete come from?

Clean demolition concrete and returned ready-mix brought to our gate in Aubrey, weighed in, checked and crushed. If you have concrete to get rid of, see concrete disposal.

When is the yard open?

6:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on weekdays, and Saturday mornings by arrangement, at 5191 FM 2931 in Aubrey.
